Winter Helicopter Elopement in Banff

Heli Elopement in the Rocky Mountains

There’s something truly magical about a winter helicopter elopement. When you strip away all the layers of tradition and expectation, what’s left is pure intimacy β€” a couple, their love, and the world around them. Add a helicopter, a snow-dusted mountain peak, and a sprinkle of snowflakes, and you’ve got a moment that’s nothing short of extraordinary. Julie and Issac decided last minute (2 weeks out!) that on a trip to Banff, why not elope too. She found an incredible dress on Amazon, and we pulled all the other details together pretty quickly! Luckily they were accompanied on this trip by her sister and her husband, so he acted as a witness and her sister performed the ceremony. I loved Julie and Issac whimsical, go with the flow attitude, and how they just went for it. When you know it’s right, you just know!

Rockies Heli

We met up at Rockies Heli in the afternoon on a calm October day. Despite being chilly, the weather cooperated and the wind held off so Julie didn’t freeze in her sleeveless dress. We landed in a meadow surrounded by mountain peaks, and the snow started gently falling all around us as they began the ceremony. As a photographer, I live for moments like these. There’s something about the stillness of the mountains that allows the couple to be fully present in their own story. There was no rush, and no clock ticking down. Just love. And snow. And a wide-open sky.

After the ceremony, they celebrated with their family with a champagne pop and some fun photos around the meadow. Likely the most memorable part of their winter helicopter elopement will be when they went for a dip and Issac *ahem* lost his footing. The ever chill Julie broke into fits of laughter, as did the rest of us! The snow let up revealing the mountain tops a bit more and providing a nice variety for the photos. After flying back to Rockies Heli base, we headed to a nearby alpine lake for some additional photos. The reflections at this lake are always amazing and truly make the mountains feel even bigger.

A winter helicopter elopement in the mountains is a rare and breathtaking experience. The light snowflakes, the vast landscape, the quiet intimacy β€” it all combines to create something truly unforgettable. As a photographer, being a part of this journey is both an honor and a gift. Every shot, every moment, feels like a treasure, and it’s a privilege to be able to capture that love against the backdrop of the mountains. For this couple, the day was more than just a winter helicopter elopement. It was an adventure. It was a celebration. And for me, it was a reminder of why I love telling stories through the lens β€” because love, in all its forms, is always worth capturing.
